Statue for a Cricketer

Melbourne Cricket Club president Paul Sheahan has raised eyebrows with bizarre remarks about refugees at Christmas Island.

Speaking at the official unveiling of Shane Warne's bronze statue at the MCG this morning, Sheahan dropped a puzzling reference to the refugee issues at Christmas island and the arrival of Warne's fiancé Liz Hurley.

"Sorry Elizabeth, I know your are English but you are now an honourary Australian and incidentally I am very pleased you didn't have to come via Christmas Island," he said.

The bizarre remarks prompted nervous laughter from officials at the function - and an awkward smile from Hurley sitting in the front row with her son, and Warne's three children.

Warne's former Test captain, Mark Taylor and more than 100 members of the public where also there for the anticipated unveiling.

The new statue will give crowds a glimpse of the much-loved cricketer in his heyday.

Artist and sculptor Louis Lauman admitted it was hard to put the new, slim, Big Bash version of Warnie out of his mind.
Should the statue depict Warnie's new look? Tell us below

He spent hours studying images of Warne in his classic bowling pose before casting the cricket legend in bronze.

The result, he hopes, would impress Warne, who saw the artwork for the first time today.

And it did - the Spin King said the addition of the statue outside gate two was humbling.

"Every time we come to the MCG to watch a football match or a cricket match or a concert ... I'll walk past and say hello," Warne said.

"It really is an important thing when you get home, no matter what sort of a day you've had, the kids just want to have Dad home and have some fun," Warne said.

"It's been fantastic that my fiancé Elizabeth and the children, Brooke, Damien, Summer and Jackson have been able to come around and watch the cricket. They were obviously a lot younger five years ago when I retired."

He said Hurley's support since the pair's star-studded match up had buoyed him further.

Warne took the opportunity to credit his glamorous fiancé and his kids for bringing renewed significance to his superstar life and for taking an interest in him.

"They have always made it easy for me.

"She is really enjoying the cricket and very supportive of me and is taking time out to understand the game and that makes me feel nice. It's a nice thing to do.

Laumen said the challenge in creating the bronze Warnie was due to Warne's new look.

"It was a challenge for me because Warnie is so fresh in everybody's memory and I guess everybody has their opinion of what it should look like," Laumen said.

"You couldn't do it the way he is now. He is a different figure and has done a lot of work to get as trim as possible, probably to the point of being underweight," he said.

"But I have tried to be as respectful as possible. It is a very striking pose."

t took six months for the sculptor to complete his creation, moulded carefully in his backyard studio after quite literally sizing Warne up earlier this year.

The sculpture is the first to be commissioned by the Melbourne Cricket Club as part of the Australia Post Avenue of Legends series, which will see a minimum of five statues placed in Yarra Park over the next five years.

Angry Bird "Sachin"

"Those who are advising me about retirement did not bring me in the team"

Sachin Tendulkar, 38 years old and hungry as ever for runs, answered questions from the media on a wide range of issues. Coca Cola and Adidas felicitated the maestro on his 100th hundred, Coke came out with a gold can and Adidas presented a special limited edition shoe.
Q: Your view on people's perception that you play with an eye on records?
A: Many people have opinions on various things. Sometimes I get the feeling they have just opinions for me and nothing else. I don't know what people are thinking about me. My attention is not on opinions, I focus on how I can improve, what I can do to help my team win. When contributing to the team's cause, records happen. Records are created with a bigger goal in mind, helping the team win. If records don't happen and India wins, I don't mind. In team meetings, we discuss ways to win matches, not who is going to chase which record.
Q: After Rahul Dravid's retirement, questions about when Sachin Tendulkar will make way?
When I should retire is a decision to be taken by me. When I started to play cricket, the decision was not taken by someone else. My own courage, guidance from my coaches and family helped. Those who advise me on retirement did not bring me into the team. I dreamt about playing for the nation and perform as well as I can. I feel that as long as commitment and passion for cricket exists in me, I should keep playing. The day I feel something amiss in some aspect of my game, or my passion or commitment to get out there is receding, I should start thinking about retirement.
Q: Celebrating 100th century on a day of defeat for India, the loss which put us out of the Asia Cup?
I don't think we are celebrating that one match (loss to Bangladesh). Basically where I have reached in the game has taken me 23 long years, not just one game. Results are extremely important, the defeat was disappointing. After losing, there was no celebration. Throughout the tournament and even before, it was felt that other sides should do well against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup. I would like to clarify that Bangladesh played good cricket. You may think they were a weak side, four matches they played, performances tell its own story. The opponent also plays to win.
Q: How did you handle the pressure between the 99th and the 100th century?
During the World Cup, after my 99th hundred, we played four World Cup games where no one raised the query about when the 100th hundred will come. You (media) created the build-up about my 100th, I did not. Then you turn around and ask me about the landmark. I was looking ahead to play cricket the way I always know. When batting, I looked ahead to scoring runs, the more the better for my team. In a day you meet about 150 to 200 people and if each one after wishing you mentioned about prayers, the thought stayed in my mind. If I liked it or not, whether I wanted to listen or not. I reminded myself to keep enjoying the game and not lose hope. From the cricketing viewpoint, it was a tough phase, the wishes kept coming.
Q: Your thoughts on playing the next World Cup?
When this question was asked in 2007 (about playing in 2011 World Cup), it was tough for me to answer. It's the same situation. I don't know what to say, if people keep praying for me, that means a lot for me. I will keep trying, the rest is in god's hands.
Q: Anything left to prove and the next target?
I don't think I need to prove to anyone. I started playing the game because I enjoyed it. My dream was to represent the nation and win the World Cup. I achieved both and I don't think there is anything bigger than winning the World Cup for India. Whatever happens beyond that, I don't know what is in store for me. I can't think about milestones. My focus is on enjoying cricket. I don't want to focus on what I have to achieve because I have already achieved what I wanted.

Kapil Dev vs Sachin Tendulkar

Kapil Dev wants Sachin Tendulkar to retire

"No one should tell me when to retire"  __Sachin

India's 1983 World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev feels that the time has run out for Sachin Tendulkar and the batting maestro should immediately retire from international cricket.

Kapil believes that Tendulkar, who has scored 68 runs in four innings in the ongoing tri-series in Australia, should have retired after the 2011 World Cup, which India won on home soil.

"From what we have seen in the last three months, he (Sachin) should have announced his retirement after the World Cup or even earlier. It's important to know that every cricketer has his time. Having served India for 22-23 years, there surely is no greater cricketer than him. But he should have announced his decision to retire from the shorter format soon after the World Cup," Kapil was quoted as saying by Aaj Tak.

"May be his time has come. Every player has his time. He is 39-40 years now. Age is not on his side as it was earlier."

Kapil did not mince his words and accused Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni of favouritism in the team. Kapil said he was bewildered at Dhoni's decision to not bowl Ravindra Jadeja in the crushing 110-runs defeat against Australia in Brisbane on Sunday.

"If you are an Indian captain, you cannot be partial. I was surprised when Rudra Pratap Singh was drafted into the Test side in England. One must find out why all rounder Jadeja was not used as a bowler even for a single over in the ODI against Australia at Brisbane. Dhoni is a mature player. I am perturbed when he picks a player as an all-rounder and doesn't make him bowl at all. If anyone makes such mistakes, he can't survive for long. If Dhoni makes such mistakes repeatedly, he will have to pay the price," Kapil added.

Kapil also said that it was time for veterans Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman to retire from Test cricket to give youngsters a chance to prove themselves in the international arena.

"I think Dravid and Laxman have played their last Test. They could be given one last Test for a respectable exit, but certainly not at the cost of compromising the team's interests.

"There is no denying that the likes of Rahul, Sachin and Laxman have served the nation like few other cricketers. But they are no longer young, and if Indian cricket does not move forward from the Big Three, it will risk falling a generation back and struggle like West Indies and Australian teams have done in the past," he said.

No Focus on Harbajan and Ashwin

We don't want to focus too heavily on Harbhajan alone: Bailey

The hype surrounding off-spinner Harbhajan Singh's return to form notwithstanding, Australia captain George Bailey is least bothered as he said his team would not be focussing on any particular individual when it takes on India here tomorrow.

"We don't want to focus too heavily on one bowler. It's not that we focus too much on Harbhajan and don't focus on Ashwin. All the Indian bowlers are pretty good and we respect that fact," said Bailey at the pre-match media conference ahead of India-Australia Super Eight match of T20 World Cup.
The Tasmanian batsman though conceded that spin was becoming a more and more important factor in the context of the tournament.
"Certainly spin has become more important factor as it will get slower and lower as the tournament progresses. But we have a pretty good line-up of fast bowlers and would like to exploit whatever is available," said Bailey.
The 30-year-old skipper believes that the team that has the 'x-factor' will emerge victorious as it requires a bit of flair to excel in a marquee game like India versus Australia.
"You need to show a bit of flair and at the same time be a bit conservative. Ultimately, the team that has more number of players with x-factor will end up on the winning side."
Bailey, who has spent a lot of time in the Chennai Super Kings' dug-out during his stint with the IPL franchise, said that he has learnt a lot from his captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
"The structure of Indian Premier League is such that you can't play more than four overseas players. One thing that I have learnt from my days with CSK is the consistency in team selections.

"In CSK we didn't happen to change the team when we lost one or two matches. This game can be very fickle and you don't decide on basis of one or two performances. I have tried to follow that while selecting Australian team. I have learnt a lot there," Bailey said.
Shane Watson has been one of their key players and now has two man-of-the-match awards from consecutive matches but Bailey refused to accept the fact that the team is overtly dependent on Watson in the game's shortest format.
"Shane is a dependable player but we are not dependent on him. It might look like that since he has been very consistent. With the ball, he has got us breakthroughs and while batting there isn't a team that doesn't fear bowling to him. But there will be days when he would not get runs and others will have to step up. We can suitably answer this question only when that situation arises," Bailey commented.

With Watson, Warner and Hussey scoring runs, the other Australian batsmen haven't got a chance to bat but Bailey assured that the boys are ready to handle pressure situations.
"We have been training very hard and we are ready to handle pressure in match situations."
Asked whether he is feeling the pressure of expectation being an Australian captain, Bailey said, "Expectations are different for every team and one wants to pass that. As far as I am concerned, I have got senior players around me. In our team, every individual knows his responsibility."
Bailey admitted that Super Eight is really tough as this is the start of the "tournament proper".

India to Play 5 Bowlers

India to play 5 bowlers against Oz

*Indian cricket team would be fielding five bowlers in the World Twenty20 opening super eight clash against Australia. Confirming the strategy, team India captain, M S Dhoni in Colombo today said that the team would play five bowlers, with the final combination only to be decided after inspecting the playing surface. With the combination of six batsman and five bowlers, it would be most likely that one of the senior batsman could face the axe against Australia*

Shewag's Availability in ICC T20 WC

Sehwag's fitness, bowling combination concern for Team India

Senior opener Virender Sehwag's finger injury along with a suitable bowling combination are two major concerns for India ahead of their opening Super Eight Game against Australia in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup.
The swashbuckling opener, who was hit on the knuckles while batting in the nets prior to England game, didn't bat during the three-hour net session today.
Although the extent of the injury is not known but Irfan Pathan padding up before everyone does raise doubts about Sehwag's availability.
According to sources in the team, the senior batsman is fine and was only rested so that it doesn't aggravate his injury before the Australia game.
The other worrying factor is the bowling combination that will be deployed against the mighty Aussies.
The five-bowler theory worked wonders for India during their 90-run victory over England but Dhoni, with his fetish for playing seven batsmen, might as well revert back to his tried, tested and much-debated formula.
Harbhajan Singh's brilliant performance against England has helped him seal his spot in the playing XI for India's opening Super Eight fixture against Australia on September 28.
The Turbanator's presence has always intimidated Australians and it is unlikely that he will be left out against a batting line-up that has top quality left-handers like David Warner, Mike Hussey.
Harbhajan though didn't bowl at the nets today is likely to bowl during the next two days. While Ravichandran Ashwin is certain to make a comeback in the playing XI in place of Ashok Dinda, the main question remains about the fate of an out-of-form Zaheer Khan.
Having been rested for the England game, the veteran seamer is completely looking out of place in the T20 set-up. Although he bowled for an hour at the nets, Zaheer looked gingerly.
His batting has deteriorated considerably and he has been a liability in the field of late. If Zaheer plays, then for the cushion, Dhoni might decide to play five bowlers.
In case Zaheer finds a place in the four-bowler set-up, then Lakshmipathy Balaji might find himself out of the playing XI as Irfan is a certainty in the side for his all-round abilities.
On the day, dope tests conducted on Harbhajan, Ashwin and Sehwag during the practice session.
According to team manager R N Baba, this was a "routine procedure" and the players were picked randomly as is the case with each and every training session during an ICC tournament.

Chairmen Srikanth's Tenure End

It would have been an injustice to make Dhoni scapegoat for losses

Krishnamachari Srikkanth, whose tenure as chairman of the national selection committee ends on September 27, tells that though the next generation of players will find it difficult to fill the void created following the retirement of legends they do have the potential to take India to the No 1 position again. Excerpts
Looking back on your time as chief selector, how would you sum-up your tenure?
* Our selection committee never wanted to be in the spotlight. We wanted Indian cricket to progress and a couple of poor series notwithstanding, we did progress as a team. We became the No 1 Test team and remained at the top for 20 months. I want this team to win the World T20 currently being held in Sri Lanka; that would be a great result for us. Overall, we did face some criticism but I guess that is just part and parcel of our job. The key was that we had the confidence of the players.
Your stint as chairman also coincided with the retirement of senior players -Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman. How did you go about picking their replacements and how challenging was the task?
* It's extremely difficult to find replacements for the greats like Kumble, Dravid and Laxman. But Indian cricket has to move on. Domestic cricket is your supply line and though there is a big gap between the standard at the domestic level and the international one, I can say that a few of them made a smooth transition. In some cases it took time for a player to progress at the international level. We had to resort to a trial-and-error method.
So how hopeful are you of the future of Indian cricket across formats?
* Of course I am hopeful. We have some magnificent batting talent in Virat Kohli and Chestehwar Pujara. They have the potential to fill the big shoes. When it comes to a spinner, we have Ravichandran Ashwin while Umesh Yadav is a fine pace bowling prospect. These players are the future of Indian cricket and they will play a role in helping India reach the No.1 ranking again. Also, the likes of Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Ishant Sharma and a few others deserve a mention.
India winning the World Cup at home was a high point but in your final year we were blanked in the Test series against England and Australia. How frustrating was the series of losses in Tests?
* Definitely winning the World Cup was an achievement about which not enough can be said. After the ODI series in South Africa, before the World Cup, perhaps not many people gave us a chance but as selectors we were confident that we had put the best team on the park for the 50 over World Cup. Yes, the losses in England and Australia were the low points. In England injuries to some key players, including that of Zaheer Khan, did affect us. But we felt that it was not the time for a knee-jerk reaction because of the poor results in England and Australia. We decided to keep faith in the team because we knew they had the potential to bounce back.

At the end of the Australia series, by which we had lost eight overseas Tests in a row, didn't the selectors consider whether or not a change in captaincy was required?
* At that point in time there was a lot of speculation regarding selection matters, which were unwarranted. All I can say is that we won as a unit and when we lost it was a collective failure. It would have been an injustice to make skipper MS Dhoni the scapegoat for Test losses. Yes, we did experiment with vice-captaincy and gave Virat Kohli the role.
Would we see you in another role as part of the Indian cricket set-up?
Hopefully, yes. Let's see what happens at the BCCI annual general meeting. Cricket has given me a lot and I would like to do my bit for the game.

Morkel's IPL Experience with Dhoni

Playing with Dhoni, Raina in IPL will certainly help: Albie Morkel

Albie Morkel, a regular in the Chennai Super Kings line-up during IPL, says the experience of sharing the dressing room with Mahendra Singh Dhoni, R Ashwin and Suresh Raina will help South Africa when they take on India in their final Super Eight game of the World Twenty20.
"Well, it certainly helps having played alongside these players. IPL has got all close together. Since I have shared the change room with these guys, I will able to give inputs to my team about them and vice-versa.
"But then, they will also need to change small things in their game and I will also need to do the same. Ultimately, it's about who's going to perform better under pressure," Morkel said ahead of South Africa's training session here.
The Proteas will be playing against India on October 2, besides meeting Pakistan and Australia in the Colombo leg of the Super Eights, and the all-rounder termed it a "very tough group".
"India have played very well and Pakistan also has played some fantastic cricket. The wicket here is a bit on the slower side and will offer turn. Our preparation needs to be different and we would focus on our preparation," said Morkel, who didn't play the last match due to an ankle injury.
Rain has been a factor in this ongoing edition with South Africa having to play a 7 overs-per-side game against Sri Lanka and under these conditions, it is better to "bat first", felt Morkel.
"It's something you can't really control and I believe it favours batting first. Obviously, even in those conditions you need to bat well and can't just score some 40-odd runs. But having played a curtailed match, I can assure you that it ends in a flash before you could settle down."
The elder of the Morkel brothers, Albie has often been Dhoni's 'Go-To Man' in IPL whether while needing a few big hits or bowling at the death. But he believed that for an impact player to prosper one needs a good team to rally around that particular player.
"I don't think you can survive unless you have a good team. You need 11 players to make an impact and on a given day, at least 3-4 should perform in order to win a match. If you look at the lesser teams, they have 2-3 players making in impact and they win the match."
Asked about his role in the side, he answered, "It's the same and that of a floater. While batting I am expected to give the side's score the required kick and bowl in different situations. For me, as long as I am able to make an impact even in 2-3 balls, I am happy.
"As long as you have that mindset, you don't need to worry. Whenever I go out there to bat in slog overs and need to get a few runs, I feel nervous. But I also do a lot of simulation training in the nets. If I can execute what I have done in the nets, I find it satisfying."

Sachin Tendulkar Retirement

Sachin Tendulkar  should retire - Brett Lee

Sachin Tendulkar should retire as per will, says Brett Lee Former Australian cricketer Brett Lee on Tuesday said that batting great Sachin Tendulkar's retirement plan should be left to his discretion.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event here, Lee said that Tendulkar should not be excessively pestered with the question.

‘Look, I think on a serious note Sachin will know when the time is right. I wake up one morning few months ago, I knew that time was right to retire. I guess the thing I have found is that I am still playing cricket. I haven't retired. Period. I only retired from international cricket so guess I am lucky. But Sachin would know when the time is right,” Lee said.
He added that his focus is to perform well in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2013.
“I feel at home with that (IPL), I feel comfortable. I love coming over here. I am looking forward to Champions League coming up next month, which I will be playing for KKR. Obviously the Big Bash is back on in Australia, which we won. I have had some really great memories in the past in the past four months; we won the big bash, then we won the Indian Premier League. I felt very lucky that I played for two winning teams and hopefully KKR will do it again, he added.
The sixth season of the IPL is scheduled to begin in April next year with eight teams.
